Stephen James Fuller 1841 - 1905

Stephen James Fuller was one of my maternal great great grandfathers.  His birth certificate states that he was born on 1st March 1841.  Stephen's parents were William and Ann Fuller.  He was born in Margate in Kent and his father was a carpenter by profession.  The family lived in a road called Serene Place - what a lovely name!

Stephen was baptised at St John's church, in Margate, on 25th April 1841.

On the 1841 census Stephen and his family are living at 1 Serene Place in Margate.  Stephen is living with his parents, William and Ann, and 4 of his siblings.

I have found 6 siblings for Stephen.  They were:

On the 1851 census Stephen and his family are still living at the house in Serene Place.  The house and the road may not exist any more.  So far I have only been able to find a road called Serene Place in Broadstairs.  I think the road was near Clifton Street, not far from Northdown Road, in Cliftonville.

On the 1861 census Stephen is still living with his parents at 1 Serene Place in Margate.  By now he has a profession and is a gas fitter.

On 25th August 1861 Stephen married Eliza White.  They married at the parish church of St John's in Margate.  Interestingly both Stephen and Eliza signed their names rather than placed a mark.

On the 1871 census Stephen, and his wife Eliza, are living at 3 Florence Row in Margate.  The couple have their own family.

The couple were eventually to have 12 children.  They were:

Two of Stephen and Eliza's children, Charles Henry and Sidney Richard, emigrated to the Nebraska in the United States.  

On the 1881 census Stephen and his family are living at 1 Thanet Road in Margate.  Stephen is still a gas fitter by profession.

On the 1891 census Stephen and Eliza are living at 6 Milton Cottages in Arnold Road in Margate.  Stephen is now a whitesmith by profession which meant that he worked with metal.  By this point in time Stephen and Eliza had had all of their children although in 1891 only 7 of them were still living with their parents.

On the 1901 census Stephen and Eliza are living in the lodge which is in Dane Park in Margate.  Stephen had become the first park keeper of Dane Park.

The photograph below shows Stephen James Fuller outside the lodge in his Park Keeper uniform.  The photo was probably taken in around 1901.  I love this picture of him.

Stephen died in the first quarter of 1905.  He was 64 when he died.

Mary Ann Setterfield 1858 - 1929

Mary Ann Setterfield was one of my maternal great great grandmothers.  Her birth certificate states that she was born on 20th April 1858 in Minster, in Thanet, Kent.  Her parents were George Setterfield and Ann Goodburn.  Mary's father was an agricultural labourer.

Mary was baptised at the parish church, St Mary the Virgin, in Minster in Thanet, Kent on 6th June 1858.

The first census which Mary appears on is that for 1861.  On the census she was 3 years old and was living with her parents and one sibling.  The family were living in Prospect Road in Minster.

On the 1861 census Mary had one sister, called Harriet.  Mary's siblings were:

Sadly Mary's parents, George and Ann, both died when they were in their 30s so there were no other children.

On the 1871 census Mary was living with her maternal Aunt and Uncle, Stephen and Sophia Goodburn, as both of her parents had died by this time.  Mary was 13 years old and she was a domestic servant.

Mary and her Aunt and Uncle were living in Cop Street in Ash, near Sandwich in Kent.

I have not yet found an 1881 census with Mary Ann Setterfield (with various spellings) or found her living with any of her close relations.  She may still have been in domestic service somewhere.

The next official document for Mary Ann Setterfield is her marriage to John William Crump Horn in 1886.  The couple married at the parish church of Holy Trinity in Margate, Kent.

The census documents for 1891, 1901 and 1911 have appeared on the blog information for Mary Ann's husband John William.

Mary Ann died in the last quarter of 1929.  She was 71 years old when she died.

I now have to miss a few of my maternal great great grandparents out.  This is because my family don't know who my Mum's father was.  Mum was born illegitimately during World War Two, in 1941.  According to the Ancestry DNA test I have taken, I have some Irish/Scottish DNA in my make up.  As the majority of the family I know, and have researched, mostly came from Kent I can only guess that Mum's father had some Irish DNA.

It is possible that there is an Irish McDermott in the family but I need to do more research on this.

Back to John William Crump Horn!  John was also illegitimate!  His birth was registered in Thanet in 1862.  This was before the ruling came in that both parents had to be present at the registration of a birth in order to be named on a child's birth certificate.

Thus on John's birth certificate his mother names the father as William Henry Crump.

John's mother, Elizabeth, was a domestic servant on the 1861 census.  At this time young girls were often employed in domestic service and were therefore living away from the family home.  So it was quite common for young female servants to become pregnant.

John was born on 24th April 1862 in Clifton Cottages in Margate.  This was where Elizabeth's parents were living at the time.  Fortunately the family stuck by the young girl and brought John up as part of their family.

Unsurprisingly there is no baptism record for John.

The first census return that John features on is that for 1871.

On the 1871 census, above, John is living at 2 Clifton Cottages which is in Clifton Street in Margate.  Although the road still exists the house no longer does.

John was living with his mother, Elizabeth, and her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth.  Also living in the house is John's uncle Joseph.

As far as I know John did not have any siblings.  Life must have been very difficult for John's mother.  She never married and must have lived with the taint of illegitimacy all her life.

On the 1881 census John is living with his grandfather (who is now a widower), his mother and his aunt and uncle.  Interestingly, John is now listed as the son of his grandfather, Joseph.

The family are living in a different house, this time at 2 Caroline Square in Margate.  Perhaps there was less scandal if John was listed as the son of the householder.  John is 18 years old and his profession is given as a lath render.  So John was involved with the building profession.

On 3rd July 1886 John married Mary Ann Setterfield.  There is no name given for John's father.  The couple married at Holy Trinity church in Margate.

Holy Trinity church no longer exists as it was hit by a bomb and destroyed during the Second World War.

On the 1891 census John has moved back into Clifton Street.  He is living with his wife, Mary Ann, and their son, John William.

In 1901 John was living at 102 Milton Road in Margate.  His profession was still as a lath render.  He is living with his wife and growing family.  John's mother is also living with the family, although she is listed as a widow.

John and his wife, Mary Ann, had 4 children, not many really for the times.  Their children were:

On the 1911 census John is living with his wife and 2 of their children.  The family are still living at 102 Milton Road in Margate.  John lists his profession as house painter.  His son, also John William, was a hairdresser and his other son Henry Edward was a grocer's porter.  Sadly Henry was to die the year after this census was taken.

John died in the 4th quarter of 1919.  He was 57 years old.

Ann Sidders 1853 - 1925

Ann Sidders was one of my paternal great great grandmothers.  Her birth certificate states that she was born on 28th April 1853 in Ickham, a village due east of Canterbury, in Kent.  Ann was the daughter of George and Frances Sidders.

Ann was baptised at the parish church of St John the Evangelist at Ickham on 7th August 1853.

The first census which Ann appears on is that for 1861, the writing of which is a little difficult to read!  On the census Ann was living in Ickham Street with her parents, George and Frances.  The couple have 5 children, one of whom was Ann.  Ann's father, George, was an agricultural labourer.

As far as I can make out Ann had 7siblings, who were:

On the 1871 census Ann is listed as 17 years old and she is living in the nearby village of Adisham.   She is a general servant in the household of a farmer called Simmons Sladden.

The following year Ann Sidders married William Danton, at the parish church in Ickham, on 12th October 1872.  William Danton was an agricultural labourer, like Ann's father.  Both of the couple signed the marriage certificate with their mark.

The census returns for Ann from 1881 to 1911 have already been uploaded for William Danton so I won't repeat them here.

William and Sarah had 10 children.  They were:

At least 5 of the children predeceased William and Ann.  Tragically the last two of the couple's sons were to die during World War 1.

Ann herself died in the October quarter of 1925.  Her husband, William, also died in this quarter.  The couple were buried in the parish church of Wingham, St Mary the Virgin, within days of each other.

William Danton 1846 - 1925

William Danton was one of my paternal two times great grandfathers.  He was baptised on 31st May 1846 at the parish church of Holy Cross at Goodnestone, near Dover, in Kent.

Very kindly the curate who baptised William stated that William was born on 6th April 1846.  William's parents were William and Sarah Danton.

The first census return that William appears on is that for 1851.  On it William is aged 4 and he is living in the village of Uffington, in the parish of Goodnestone.  He is living with his parents, William and Sarah, and his paternal grandparents Stephen and Margaret Danton.  Clearly the family are quite poor as Stephen is listed as a pauper.  Stephen had been an agricultural labourer as was his son William.

Thus far I have only found one sibling for William Danton who I can identify as definitely being his sibling.  This was:

Mary Ann Danton 1843 - 1917

It  is highly likely that the couple had other children but I have not yet found a census return for 1861 for any of the family.  

The next census return that William appears on is the one for 1871.  On it William is aged 24 and he is working as a farm servant (or labourer) and he is living in Adisham.

It was probably in Adisham that William Danton was to meet his future wife, Ann Sidders.  The couple were married at the parish church of Saint John the Baptist, in Ickham, Kent.  The couple were married on 12th October 1872.  Neither of them could write as both placed their mark on the certificate.

On the 1881 census return William, and his wife Ann, are living in Wingham.  William is still an agricultural labourer and the couple have now have some children.

So far I have found that William and Sarah had 10 children.  They were:

At least 5 of the children were to predecease William and Ann.  Tragically the last two of the couple's sons were to die during World War 1.

In 1891 William and Ann were living in Wingham High Street.  William is still an agricultural labourer.

On the 1901 census return William and Ann have moved house.  They are now living in a cottage in Goodnestone.  William's profession is given as a yardman on a farm - so still an agricultural labourer.

The last census I have that William and Ann appear on is that for 1911.

On the 1911 census William is aged 65 and his wife, Ann, is 59.  Also living with them is one of their sons, William George Danton, who is 13.  Sadly, this son was to die on 25 January 1918 from wounds received during the First World War.  He was buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery in Poperinge, Belgium.

William Danton died in the 4th quarter of 1925 at the age of 79.  The death was registered in the Eastry registration district.  An area in which William, and his wife Ann, were to live all of their lives.

Elizabeth Wilson 1847 - 1927

Elizabeth Wilson was one of my paternal great great grandmothers.  According to her birth certificate she was born on 2nd September 1847 in Staple, near Canterbury, Kent.

Elizabeth's baptismal record states that her parents were William and Mary Wilson.  She was baptised on 7th November 1847 at the parish church of St James in Staple.

On the 1851 census Elizabeth is 3 years old.  She is living with her parents, William and Mary, and 2 of her siblings.  Her father, William, is an agricultural labourer.

On the 1861 census Elizabeth is 13 years old and is living as a servant in the household of a James Petley, a farmer, and his family.  Elizabeth is a nursemaid.  Quite ironic really as she is still effectively a child herself.

On the 1871 census Elizabeth is 23 and a nursemaid.  This time, however, she is living at 62 Grosvenor Place in Margate.  She is living in the household of a school master and his family.  The house is quite large, it's likely that the house is also the school.  The census seems to indicate that there are 61 people living at the house including all of the pupils!  I'm not sure how many houses there were altogether, that's quite a squash!

On 23rd January 1872 Elizabeth married John Michael Newport at the parish church, of St James, in Staple, Kent.  The blog for John Michael Newport gives more information, and the census returns for 1881 through to 1911, for the couple and their family.

The couple had 9 children, 6 of whom pre-deceased them.  The children were:

Elizabeth died in the second quarter of 1927.  She was 79 years old.

John Michael Newport 1843 - 1922

John Michael Newport was one of my paternal great great grandfathers.  According to his birth certificate he was born on 21st December 1843 in Margate.

John was baptised on 11th February 1844 in the parish church of St John the Baptist in Margate.  His parents are listed as Thomas and Mary Ann Newport.

The first census return that John appears on is that from 1851 (shown below).

John's father was a gardener by profession and he was born in St Lawrence.  His mother, Mary Ann, was also born in St Lawrence although the 5 sons that they have on the census return were all born in Margate.  The family were living in an area of Margate called Lydden.  Lydden is a small hamlet on the outskirts of Margate between Margate and Manston.  It is surrounded by farm land which would probably have provided plenty of work for agricultural labourers and possibly also for John's father, Thomas at the time.

John's parents were about 40 and 33 which means that Thomas was born in around 1811 and Mary Ann was born about 1818.

1853 must have been a very tough year for Thomas and Mary Ann as 3 of their children died.  I haven't got the children's death certificates, it's possible that the children died from consumption (tuberculosis) which was a big killer in 19th century Britain.

On the 1861 census (below) John is living in the household of a farmer, called John Chapman, and his family.  John is now 17 and he is the mate of an agricultural carter who is also employed on the farm.

John is listed as living in Nash Court.  In modern times there is a farm called Nash Farm.  The farm was next to Lydden Farm so John wouldn't have had far to travel for work.

On the 1871 census John is 27 and is living at the family home with his parents and 3 of his siblings, Sarah, George and Emma.

John is an agricultural labourer and his father is listed as a farmer.  The family are living in Lydden.

On 23rd January 1872 John Michael Newport married Elizabeth Wilson at the parish church of St John the Baptist in Margate.  Both of them were able to sign their names.  The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Wilson and Sarah Ann Wilson who were Elizabeth's siblings.

On the 1881 census John is still living with his parents.  His father, Thomas, is listed as a market gardener.  The family's house is just given as 'cottage.'  Unfortunately I don't know where the cottage was or even if it's still standing.

John and his wife, Elizabeth, have a family of their own now.  The children are listed as:

Herbert aged 7 (born about 1874)
William aged 5 (born 1876)
Walter aged 3 (born 1878)
George aged 2 (born 1879)

On the 1891 census (below) John is still living in Lydden but is no longer with his parents.  John's father, Thomas, had died in 1884.

The 1891 census document was one of the most difficult to find for John and his family.  This was because the family are listed on the census with initials for their first names.  The family are living in Lydden and John is a farm labourer.

On the 1901 census John and his family are living in Westwood.   The census return doesn't give any more details about where specifically.  Westwood is only a very short distance from Lydden but it was enough to place the couple in a different parish.  The parish is St Peter's which is in Broadstairs.

John's profession is given as market gardener.  He was living with his wife, Elizabeth, and 3 of his children; Walter, Elizabeth and Mabel.

The couple were to have 9 children:

My Dad remembers Elizabeth Lilian, known as aunt Lil, with great fondness.  She never married and made a career for herself as a very good cook.

On the 1911 census John lists his profession as farm labourer.  His wife, Elizabeth, and his daughter, Mabel, are given as laundresses.  This was quite a lowly profession so the family must have been quite poor.

John wrote their address as Westwood so, again, I don't know where precisely the family lived.  Interestingly John writes that Westwood is in Ramsgate.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the family or their house.  John's death was registered in the second quarter of 1922.  He was 78 when he died.  The couple's daughter, Mabel, died in 1913 so, tragically, 6 of their 9 children pre-deceased them.
